Read guide books and brochures about the destination you will be visiting. If you're going on a hiking trip, start taking walks with the kids to build up their stamina. If your kids have any special interests, find the time to purchase a book to find if that special interest could be enhanced in the trip you will be taking. If you're planning on a trip out of the country, it is better that you equip yourself with maps and translation books.
